lirum larum is a brand new joint of >efdemin< and >rndm< who are better known as >pigon< when they team-up in the studio or behind the decks. always riding the thin line between house and techno with a twist for the obscure they decided to have their own imprint from now on. lirum larum will publish music of their own project, from friends and other partners in crime. in that regard the first release is the perfect prototype of what can be expected in the future. the 1st release features a composition of their own in two mindblowing interpreations. no other than >function< (dave sumner of the splendid sandwell collective) and >tobias.< (who released a totally underrated outstanding album in ostgut last year!) provide their interpretations of pigons track >kamm< (originally released on beatstreet in 2008).

aura go rises, opens, rouses not unlike a soft light growing to illumination, a day slowly revealing itself. synths whisper and ring out – like bells marking an early hour – at the start, followed by a succession of other awakenings: a palpitating beat, vocalizations that repeat like undulations, percussive poundings and ringings. it all leads to full on, acid-infused, dance floor hypnosis, with producer dennis dj mcnany pushing polyrhythmic, almost tribal beats to the very front. with the addition of husky vocals from collaborator jee young sim – imagine siouxsie sioux crossed with planningtorock – the sound becomes something altogether, and altogether unexpectedly, gorgeous.

the citizens bands second instalment for ramonas favourite label hollows their long lasting love affair. christian beisswengers (cb funk, one half of arto mwambe) is nothing less than dealing with the demise of an empire. >broken rome< is a codeine trip through early nu groove rave tracks as well as an ode to junior vasquez at the helm of the sound factory seen and heard through frosted glass. >densed< on the other hand tips its toes into the current deep house stream with an arto-mwambe-like hook and a thumping bass line. the spaces in-between those rudiments are taken up by the idm finger exercise and jewel that is >into<: ottoman dancing!

obviously, extrawelt are currently on the roll of their lives. with their second album in aufruhr from last november being still on everyones lips, the two hamburg residents and excessive live performers arne schaffhausen and wayan raabe deliver another encore. i dont know about other musicians, but we have the constant urge to make music.

march sees the formidable hypercolour deliver its most surprising output yet, an ep from none other than groove armada. tom findlay and andy cato need little introduction as groove armada. chart smashes, huge live tours and being part of the worldwide electronic music history aside, the duo have never lost touch with their acid house roots and have continued to be devoted to record buying, djing and the much maligned promo trawl. tom and andy have been avid followers of the label it seemed, since its inception. it was through label head jamie, meeting the guys back in 2010 at space in ibiza, and then continued communication via hypercolour promos, that led to an out-of-the-blue email requesting an informal hook up in east london and, within just a few days, a release was scheduled. that release is the >no knock ep<, four tracks that range from 808 fuelled old school cuts to low slung, moog-bassd electronic funk. each sound is lovingly crafted but there is an analog rawness throughout and every track has the sort of tweaked, off-kilter and occasionally awkward vibe that hypercolour do so well. it just takes a bit of imagination to guess what a ga release on hypercolour should sound but failing that, just check the release out as it wont disappoint.

bill youngman has become one of the most important parts of the killekill family. his new record displays his wide range of interests: from dark techno in shadent he crosses over to drone monster alert in wespe to his very own style of melodic electro in centrumcircuit. about bill youngman: scandinavia, tresor, null etc., bill has from day one been producing a lot of excellent other stuff. for exam- ple, he released one album of the finest electronica on depth charge’s dc recordings under the alias audible, several great eps of electro on serotonin and recently remixed jamie lidell in a rather techy dubstep style for warp. bill doesnt follow trends and dislikes being categorized into one stale genre and so perfectly fits into the killekill master plan. expect several eps from him on killekill in the future. bill will furthermore attempt to push the threshold of modern electronic music production.

originally recorded for chris blackwell of island records the rights of ‘life of contradiction’ were then given to joe higgs who released the album in jamaica and the u.k. in 1975. it was immediately obvious that this was a unique collection coming from a completely different direction to the other reggae releases of the period. although joe had first recorded some of the songs in the early sixties for studio one it was as if he was at last able to realise a vision of his own music that had previously been denied to him: either by financial constraints or from not having the right situation with the right musicians.

masami akita and lasse marhaug have been working together since the mid 90ies. the first release on marhaugs (now deleted) label jazzassin records in 1995 was the >first rock< split single. in 2001 merzbow and jazzkammer (marhaugs project with john hegre) released a live album. later, akita and marhaug executed several live collaborations, but often with other artists such as hair stylistics and jim o rourke. in 2010 they finally got together to record as duo. recorded at gok sound studios in tokyo the results can now be heard as >mer mar<.
made using a combination of scrap metal screeching, analogue synths, and enough effect pedals to give you overweight with most airline companies, >mer mar< is a tour de force for both of these noise veterans, hinting to some classic 80s merzbow jams such as material action.

like hardly any other ambassador of modern rhein main house music, christian burkhardt has experienced a true rocket-like takeoff in the last year. burkhardts cocoon debut ep stopover goa has, after one year, still a place of honour in many djs record cases. also his legendary live set in the pouring rain at last years green & blue may belong to the lasting memories of a life dedicated to electronic music. the heidelberg-born producer has already worked for la peña, raum…musik and oslo, and his collaborations with einzelkind and sascha dive became a talking point, too. with his second ep for cocoon, he again sets new standards. theres nobody around who is able to alienate vocals from the collective memory of afro-american culture into a hallucinogenic cocktail without harmful side effects in such a way than burkhardt is. nevertheless, and despite the massive, forward-pushing bass drum and hand claps, he never loses the focus of his soul. so - open your mind, we wish you lots of fun with heart and mind and the considerably acid-like waffles, while the tropical-hypnotic seagull atmosphere of twentysecondcenturydrama already whets the appetite for the upcoming club summer season of 2012.

last year’s ‘the age of compassion’ by chicago underground house don tevo howard was one of the standout tracks for buzzin’ fly in 2011with widespread dj and media support. it joined his burgeoning body of work on other acclaimed labels such as rush hour and his own beautiful granville. now tevo returns with his follow-up for buzzin’ fly. if ‘the age of compassion’ was a simple and elegant dancefloor bump wrapped in warm analogue melancholia, then the ‘monument ep’ is its nemesis - a stark future-retro reinterpretation of the origins of house music build from the bare components of machines: raw drums, sub bass, sine waves, square waves and oscillators. and yet there is still a burnished beauty to this ep. all three tracks seems to find echoes of each other in their arrangements and brittle harmony. machine music for the modern age edged with passion and feeling, and another fresh step for its producer.

after a break from releasing new material while he concentrated on developing the freerotation electronic music festival, mindtours label boss steevio is back with a 4 track ep of live improvised modular music. modular techno vol 1 is four tracks of raw, deep, jazz tinged, freeform, analogue minimal electronics, all sequencing and sound manipulation was jammed live on steevios modular synthesizer, without the use of a computer, or eq / compression / mastering or any other processing in a deliberate attempt to capture a live electronic music performance directly to vinyl.

second release in the delsin x-dsr series containing re-issues of personal favourites. m.k.s the mkappella was originally a track on the b-side of the very original version of his huge burning ep on the area 10 label. the mkappella is some original innocent deep sunset house. other side contains the adventurous lost by the 7th plain aka luke slater, taken from his debut album the 4 cornered room way back from 1994, the high days of the uk techno scene, with lot of hints towards the original detroit sound.
